Step-by-step

  • Mash Potato:
    1. Boil potato 5 minutes, then simmer in cold water to peel the skin.
    2. Boil again in salt water for 20 minutes. Make sure the water is enough and not dry off.
    3. Mash the potato, add salt, butter, milk/yogurt. Heat it up and stir.
    4. For the sauce, pour some milk in pan, add cheese slices (not too much). Make sure it comes out creamy and liquid. Too much cheese will freeze it up.
  • Steak:
    1. Punch and cut a bit of the steak.
    2. Add salt, black pepper, and oregano leaves (just a bit).
    3. Melt the butter in pan. Put the steak in.
    4. Make sure the steak is not overheated.
    5. Add mushrooms.
Steak and Mash Potato: A Simple Weeknight Dinner

My Simple Steak and Mash Potato Dinner

Weeknights can be crazy busy, juggling work, kids, and everything else life throws at you. Finding time for a delicious and satisfying dinner often feels impossible. But it doesn't have to be! This simple Steak and Mash Potato recipe is my go-to for those nights when I need a hearty, flavorful meal without spending hours in the kitchen. It’s a classic combination that never disappoints, and best of all, it’s incredibly easy to adapt to what I have on hand.

I’m a busy working mom, and I appreciate recipes that are both quick and satisfying. This one fits the bill perfectly. The preparation is straightforward, and the cooking time is minimal. What I love most is the flexibility. Sometimes, I'll add different herbs to the steak, or swap the yogurt in the mashed potatoes for cream. Other times, I'll add sauteed vegetables alongside to make it a more complete meal. The key is to keep it simple and let the quality of the ingredients shine through. A good cut of steak and some lovely creamy mashed potatoes are all you truly need for a truly comforting meal.

The beauty of this recipe is its adaptability. For instance, I often add a sprinkle of garlic powder or onion powder to the mashed potatoes for an extra layer of flavor. Similarly, experimenting with different types of cheese in the cheese sauce can add a sophisticated touch. I’ve tried everything from sharp cheddar to creamy Gruyere, and each one yields a slightly different flavor profile. Don't be afraid to get creative and make it your own!

Ingredients I used: The ingredient list is refreshingly short. I usually have most of these on hand already.

  • 2 small potatoes
  • 1 cup Greek yogurt (or cream)
  • 1 cube butter
  • A splash of milk
  • Steak (your favorite cut)
  • 5 mushrooms
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Oregano leaves

This recipe is a testament to the fact that simple doesn’t have to mean boring. With just a few readily available ingredients, I can create a delicious and satisfying meal that my family loves. It's a weeknight staple, a comfort food classic, and a reminder that even on the busiest of days, taking the time to nourish myself and my family is always worth it. Enjoy!
