Ham Gravy: Simple and Delicious

I whipped this gravy up because we had none. I dont recall ever having nor hearing of ham gravy before, but it was so good I have to share. The ham I used was a 9lb bone-in, fully cooked, hickory smoked, glazed and spiral cut, it also came with a brown sugar packet for a second glazing. After I covered the ham with foil and put it in the oven for an hour (as the directions directed), I spooned out some drippings BEFORE adding the second glaze and returning the ham to the oven for the final 30 minutes of warming up.

My Unexpected Ham Gravy Adventure

As a busy working mom, my life revolves around juggling work deadlines, school pick-ups, and making sure everyone in the family is fed. Dinner time is often a whirlwind of activity, a testament to the organized chaos that is my daily life. This particular evening was no exception. We were having a simple ham dinner, a classic comfort food, quick and easy, perfect for a busy weeknight. But there was one crucial element missing: the gravy. A simple oversight, yet one that threatened to derail our perfectly planned (or at least, perfectly intended) meal.

Now, I'm not one for elaborate recipes or hours spent in the kitchen. My cooking style leans toward "efficient" rather than "gourmet." So, when I realized we lacked gravy, my initial thought was, "Oh well, we'll just eat it without." But then, a spark of culinary curiosity ignited. I remembered the delicious drippings from our glazed ham, rich and savory, the essence of the perfectly cooked meat. Why not use those? The thought of creating a quick and easy ham gravy flashed in my mind, an impromptu adventure in the kitchen. I'd never heard of ham gravy before, honestly. It wasn't something I'd ever considered, but the idea was simple and appealing.

With a confident (if slightly naive) air, I embarked on my impromptu culinary project. To my utter delight, the resulting ham gravy was a revelation! It was simple, yes, but the flavor was incredibly rich and satisfying, a perfect complement to the perfectly cooked ham. The process was unbelievably quick and the result was a flavor explosion. I was surprised by how well the simple ingredients blended together; it was a flavor combination that truly exceeded my expectations. The salty, smoky goodness of the ham drippings, combined with the subtle thickness from the cornstarch and flour, created a perfect harmony of tastes and textures. It was incredibly simple, surprisingly delicious, and absolutely perfect for a busy weeknight dinner.

From that day forward, ham gravy became a regular fixture in our dinner rotation. It’s become a family favorite and an easy way to elevate a simple meal into something truly special. The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity – there is no need for complicated techniques or hard-to-find ingredients. It's a testament to the fact that sometimes, the most delightful culinary creations are born from spontaneity and a willingness to experiment in the kitchen. So, next time you find yourself with leftover ham drippings, don't hesitate to give this simple recipe a try. You might just surprise yourself with the amazing results.

Beyond the Basic Ham Gravy:

While the basic recipe is incredibly versatile and delicious as is, there are many ways to customize and elevate your ham gravy to even greater heights. Consider adding a splash of your favorite herbs and spices – a pinch of thyme, rosemary, or even a dash of black pepper can add a new layer of complexity. For a richer gravy, you can also incorporate a tablespoon of butter or cream towards the end of the cooking process.

The possibilities are endless! Experiment with different types of ham – try using a different glaze for a subtly sweet or spicy kick. Or, for a completely different experience, try substituting some of the drippings with chicken or turkey broth, creating a lighter, more subtle gravy. The beauty of cooking is its adaptability, its endless capacity for creativity and experimentation, which is something I cherish greatly.

Ultimately, the best part about this recipe isn't just the deliciousness of the final product, but the memory it creates. It serves as a reminder to be open to unexpected culinary adventures, to embrace the art of improvisation, and to savor the little moments of deliciousness that arise from simple ingredients and even simpler steps. The lesson? Sometimes, even the most unexpected creations can become treasured family traditions. So, get cooking, and get ready to enjoy a truly exceptional ham gravy.
