Classic BLT Sandwich

This is a sandwich that I crave a lot. I am just posting it because I couldn't find it posted already. I couldn't believe that! My ex-DH wondered how I make these, so I decided to post it and send him the recipe. Nothing fancy -- just the real, simple, unabridged version. UPDATE: After reading Peg629's review, I have tried it that way, with one slice of toast spread with yellow mustard, and I must say it really, really makes an exceptional BLT! Such a subtle difference, yet genuinely makes a superior BLT, in my opinion! (Thank you Peg629 for that awesome suggestion!)

Step-by-step

  • Cook bacon until crispy then drain on paper towels.
  • Toast the 8 slices of bread.
  • Spread 1 tablespoon mayo on each slice of toasted bread. (More or less to taste).
  • Add 1 slice of lettuce to 4 pieces of mayo-spreaded toast.
  • Add 2 slices of tomato on top of lettuce.
  • Arrange 3 slices of bacon evenly on top of tomato. (Break bacon slices in half to fit if needed).
  • Add 1 slice of lettuce on top of bacon.
  • Put the remaining 4 pieces of mayo-spreaded toast on top to finish the sandwiches.
  • Enjoy!
  • NOTE I also like to butter the toast slices before adding the mayo -- higher in fat but tastier in my opinion!
My Classic BLT: A Simple Sandwich with a Story

My Classic BLT: A Simple Sandwich, a World of Flavor

There's something undeniably comforting about a perfectly made BLT. The crisp bacon, the juicy tomatoes, the cool crunch of lettuce, all nestled between soft, toasted bread…it's a symphony of textures and tastes that always hits the spot. For me, the BLT isn't just a sandwich; it's a little piece of culinary nostalgia, a reminder of simpler times, and a testament to the power of classic ingredients.

I've been making BLTs for as long as I can remember. It’s a recipe passed down, not through generations of family recipes, but through years of kitchen experiments and happy accidents. It's a sandwich that has seen me through countless lunches, picnics, and late-night cravings. The recipe has evolved over time, refined by personal preferences and insightful suggestions from fellow food enthusiasts (a big thank you to Peg629 for the mustard tip!). I used to make it purely instinctively, the way my hands remembered the movements, the proportions settling into a comfortable rhythm. It’s a simple recipe, really; the trick isn't in the exotic ingredients or fancy techniques but in the quality of the components and a bit of love poured into the making.

The bacon, for example, is the heart of the BLT. It needs to be perfectly crisp, with a satisfying snap that echoes with each bite. I prefer using a good quality, thick-cut bacon, allowing it to render slowly until it achieves that ideal level of crispiness. The tomatoes, on the other hand, must be ripe and juicy, bursting with summery sweetness. Nothing beats a perfectly ripe tomato; its flavour is the cornerstone of this sandwich. And the bread? A good quality white bread holds the filling perfectly, adding to the sensory experience. I find that slightly buttered bread, as suggested in my updated version of this recipe, adds to the overall richness and flavour. It's a small change but a significant upgrade!

Beyond the ingredients, there's a certain artistry to assembling a BLT. The layering is crucial: a generous spread of mayonnaise (Hellmann's is my go-to), a crisp layer of lettuce, thick slices of juicy tomatoes, the crispy bacon—this is the culinary ballet of making a perfect BLT. It's not just about the order, but also the proportion of each element that leads to a balanced and delicious mouthful. Even the crispness of the bacon and the ripeness of the tomatoes require a discerning eye.

This sandwich transcends simple ingredients; it's an experience. It's the happy memory of a midday break, of a quick lunch before a busy afternoon, a late-night snack after a long day. It's a testament to the comforting familiarity of simple pleasures. This BLT, in its simplicity, reminds me that sometimes, the most satisfying meals are the ones that require the least amount of effort, the ones that allow the flavours of fresh, high-quality ingredients to speak for themselves. It’s a reminder to savour the little moments, the simple joys in life.

So, the next time you're looking for a quick, satisfying meal, or a nostalgic trip back to simpler times, give my classic BLT a try. It's a recipe that's easy to make, yet delivers a flavor that's anything but simple. It's a taste of home, a taste of happiness, a taste of the perfect BLT.
