Step-by-step

  • Preheat oven to 350F, spray a 9x13 casserole dish with non-stick cooking spray.
  • Cut each of your 10 small biscuits into 6 pieces each and layer on the bottom of the casserole dish.
  • Pre-bake dough for 25 minutes.
  • In a large frying pan, cook your diced peppers and onion using a little cooking spray for 10 minutes. (Optional to add in mushrooms).
  • In a small pan, melt your butter over medium heat, stir in diced garlic and cook for 1 minute, then add in your flour and mix well, let cook for 2 minutes.
  • Add your milk and seasonings and stir often until the sauce thickens, about 8-10 minutes.
  • Once veggies are sauteed, pour over the top of your baked biscuit pieces, then layer your shredded steak.
  • You can cook the steak as you choose. I cooked mine in the crock-pot on low in a little broth for 3-4 hours depending on the size of the steak; you should be able to shred it nicely. However, if you want to save time you can grill the steak and cut into small pieces.
  • Drizzle your garlic cream sauce evenly over your biscuits and steak mixture.
  • Sprinkle mozzarella cheese on top, cover with foil and bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes, check all biscuits are cooked.
  • Drizzle with ranch dressing (I pipe mine from a small zip lock bag).
  • Cut into 6 equal servings.
My Philly Steak Bubble Up Adventure

A Weeknight Winner: Philly Steak Bubble Up

As a busy working mom, finding time to cook a delicious and satisfying meal can feel like a Herculean task. Between juggling work deadlines, school pick-ups, and the never-ending cycle of laundry, the last thing I want to do is spend hours in the kitchen. That's why I'm constantly on the lookout for recipes that are both quick and easy, yet impressive enough to satisfy my family's appetites. This Philly Steak Bubble Up recipe is exactly that – a game-changer in my weeknight meal routine. It’s surprisingly simple to throw together, requiring minimal prep time and clean-up, and the result is a bubbly, cheesy, and flavorful casserole that everyone devours.

The beauty of this recipe lies in its adaptability. I often adjust it based on what I have on hand. Sometimes I add extra veggies, like mushrooms or zucchini, to sneak in some extra nutrients. Other times, I swap out the sirloin for a different cut of steak, or even use leftover roast chicken for a lighter option. The basic concept remains the same: layers of buttery biscuits, savory steak, and a creamy garlic sauce, all topped with melted mozzarella cheese. It's comfort food at its finest, and it’s always a hit, no matter what variations I use.

The magic of the biscuits: The Pillsbury biscuits are the secret weapon here. They provide a wonderfully soft and fluffy base that soaks up the delicious juices from the steak and sauce. I love the convenience of using pre-made biscuits, but feel free to use homemade biscuits if you have the time and inclination. Just make sure to cut them into bite-sized pieces for even cooking.

The steak: I typically use top sirloin, as it’s relatively lean and affordable. However, any leftover steak will work perfectly, as will chicken or even ground beef for a different flavor profile. For time-saving, pre-cooked or shredded steak is a great option. If using raw steak, I often cook it in the slow cooker for ultimate tenderness and ease.

The sauce: This simple garlic cream sauce is what pulls the whole dish together. It's rich, creamy, and flavorful, and adds a touch of elegance to an otherwise simple casserole. The combination of butter, garlic, flour, and milk creates a smooth and velvety texture that perfectly complements the savory steak and biscuits.

The cheese: A generous layer of mozzarella cheese on top adds that final touch of cheesy goodness. It melts beautifully and creates a golden-brown crust, adding both texture and flavor.

Beyond the weeknight: While this dish is a perfect weeknight solution, it's also versatile enough for game day gatherings, potlucks, or even a casual weekend lunch. It's a crowd-pleaser that's easy to transport and always a welcome addition to any table.

So, the next time you're looking for a quick, easy, and delicious meal that's sure to impress your family and friends, give this Philly Steak Bubble Up a try. It's a recipe that has become a staple in my kitchen, and I'm confident it will become a favorite in yours, too. Trust me, this is one recipe that you'll want to keep coming back to again and again.

Serving suggestions: Serve this warm, straight from the oven. A simple side salad or some roasted vegetables would complement this dish beautifully. For a truly indulgent meal, serve with a side of mashed potatoes or french fries.
