  • Total Time: 30 minutes

Step-by-step

  • In a large bowl, mix together the flour, starch, egg, salt and 1/2 teaspoon ground chili pepper until it’s a thick paste. Add the wings and mix with your hands until they’re thoroughly coated.
  • Put the coated wings in the ActiFry and drizzle with the oil. Close the lid and cook for 35 minutes, until brown and crispy. Or deep-fry the wings in a pot of hot oil (Maangchi recommends 350-380°F, 177-193°C) twice, in batches. Then drain well.
  • In a large pot or wok, bring to a boil the water, ginger, soy sauce, brown sugar, vinegar, and corn or rice syrup. Let cook until the mixture becomes syrupy and thick, and starts to foam. It should be about as thick as honey.
  • Turn off the heat and stir in the cooked wings, peanuts, sesame seeds, and chili flakes, until completely coated.

A Home Cook's Take on Korean Sweet and Spicy Chicken Wings

As a busy mom, finding time to cook delicious and exciting meals can be a challenge. But sometimes, the most rewarding meals are the simplest ones, the ones that bring the whole family together around the table. This recipe for Korean Sweet and Spicy Chicken Wings has become a staple in our home, a crowd-pleaser that’s surprisingly easy to make, even on a weeknight. I first discovered this dish through Maangchi’s recipe, but I’ve adapted it to fit my family’s tastes and my own kitchen capabilities.

What I love most about this recipe is its versatility. You can easily adjust the spice level to your liking, adding more or less chili flakes depending on your preference. My kids, for example, are less adventurous with spice, so I usually make a milder batch for them and a spicier one for my husband and myself. The beauty of this recipe lies in its balance – the sweet and savory flavors complement each other beautifully, creating a complex taste profile that’s both comforting and exciting. The crispy texture of the wings adds another layer of satisfaction, making this a truly unforgettable culinary experience.

The aroma alone is enough to make your mouth water. The combination of sweet brown sugar, fragrant ginger, and a hint of chili creates a symphony of smells that permeates the entire kitchen. It’s a smell that evokes feelings of warmth and togetherness, a reminder of family dinners and cherished moments. And the best part? The cleanup is relatively easy! With a little planning and some efficient kitchen techniques, you can have a delicious meal on the table without spending hours slaving away in the kitchen.

The process of making these chicken wings isn't just about following a recipe; it's about creating a memory. I often find myself reminiscing about family dinners where these wings were the star of the show – the laughter, the conversation, the shared joy of a delicious meal. This recipe is more than just food; it’s a connection to loved ones, a celebration of simple pleasures, and a testament to the power of food to bring people together. Whether it's a weeknight dinner or a special occasion, these Korean Sweet and Spicy Chicken Wings are sure to be a hit. They’re a dish that transcends the ordinary, transforming a simple meal into a memorable experience.

Beyond the Recipe: Tips and Variations

To achieve perfectly crispy wings, I highly recommend double-frying them. The initial frying cooks the chicken through, while the second fry crisps them up beautifully. Don't be afraid to experiment with different types of oil. I often use peanut oil or canola oil, but you could try other options, depending on your preference.

You can also play with the sauce. Feel free to adjust the amount of brown sugar, soy sauce, or chili flakes to personalize the flavor to your liking. Adding a touch of honey or gochujang (Korean chili paste) can add another dimension of flavor. For those who prefer a less intense flavor, you can reduce the amount of chili flakes significantly, or even omit them altogether. The resulting sweet and savory glaze is delicious regardless.

Serving suggestions are endless. These wings are fantastic on their own, but they are also delicious served with rice, steamed vegetables, or a simple salad. They make a great addition to any buffet or party spread and are equally satisfying enjoyed as a cozy, comforting meal. And don't forget the peanuts and sesame seeds – they provide a delightful crunch and a nutty, earthy counterpoint to the spicy-sweet glaze.

So, give this recipe a try. It's easier than you think and the results are incredibly rewarding. Let the aroma fill your kitchen, gather your loved ones around the table, and savor every bite of these unforgettable Korean Sweet and Spicy Chicken Wings. They’re more than just a meal; they’re a taste of home, a celebration of family, and a delightful culinary adventure.
