Step-by-step

  • Remove peel from each piece of fruit in 4 pieces. Set fruit aside. Lay peels flat with white membrane sides up. Use a sharp knife to scrape off about half the membrane from each piece of peel; discard removed membranes. Cut remaining peel into very thin slices with the same knife or kitchen shears; place in a medium saucepan. Add water and baking soda; stir. Bring to a boil on medium heat, stirring occasionally; cover. Simmer on medium-low heat for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Chop reserved fruit. Add to saucepan along with any fruit juices; stir. Simmer, covered, for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Measure exactly 4 cups prepared fruit into a large saucepan. Add pectin crystals; mix well. Bring to a full rolling boil on high heat, stirring constantly. Add sugar; mix well. Return to a full rolling boil; cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Stir and skim foam for 5 minutes to prevent fruit from floating to the top.
  • Pour immediately into warm sterilized jars, filling to within 1/4 inch of rims. Seal while hot with sterilized two-piece lids with new centers. Let stand at room temperature until set.

My Simple, Foolproof Orange Marmalade Recipe

As a busy professional, I don't have a lot of time to spend in the kitchen, but I still love making delicious homemade treats. This orange marmalade recipe is my go-to—it's easy, reliable, and the result is a jar of sunshine that brightens up even the dreariest of days. The key is using Certo pectin; it takes the guesswork out of jam-making, ensuring a perfectly set marmalade every time. No more worrying about whether it’ll gel properly!

This recipe isn’t just for busy people, though. It's perfect for anyone who wants a delicious, homemade marmalade without the hassle of complex instructions. The process is straightforward, and the ingredients are readily available. I’ve adapted it over the years to fit my lifestyle, and now I can whip up a batch on a weekend morning, knowing I'll have a delicious treat to enjoy for weeks to come. The intense citrus flavour is a wonderful complement to toast, scones, or even just a dollop on yogurt.

The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity. You'll start by preparing the oranges and lemons – a simple process of peeling and slicing. Don't worry about making the slices perfectly thin; a little variation adds character. The pectin does the heavy lifting, setting the marmalade to a perfect consistency. I like to add a bit of extra zest for an even more pronounced citrus flavor. But the basic recipe is so good, it really doesn't need any fancy additions!

One of my favorite aspects of making this marmalade is the satisfying feeling of creating something delicious from scratch. It's a rewarding process, and the end result – a jar of vibrant orange marmalade – is a tangible representation of that effort. The homemade touch is undeniable; you can taste the freshness and the love poured into each step. I’ve even started gifting jars of my marmalade to friends and family—it’s a unique and thoughtful present.

Beyond the deliciousness and the rewarding process, homemade marmalade offers a sense of control over the ingredients. You know exactly what goes into it—no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives—just the pure, natural taste of oranges and lemons, enhanced by the sweetness of sugar. And let's not forget the economic benefit: homemade marmalade often works out cheaper than buying the store-bought equivalent, a satisfying extra bonus in these times.

Making marmalade has become a regular ritual for me. I often find myself making a batch when I need a calming activity or a creative outlet amidst a busy week. The rhythmic chopping of the peels, the simmering of the fruit, the careful pouring into jars—it's a surprisingly meditative experience. I find myself lost in the moment, and then suddenly, I have a gorgeous jar of marmalade, a testament to a quiet afternoon well-spent.

So, give this easy recipe a try. You'll be amazed at how simple it is to make your own delicious orange marmalade. It's the perfect project for a weekend afternoon, and you'll be rewarded with a delicious treat you can enjoy for weeks to come. Trust me, the taste of homemade is unbeatable!

Tips for Success:

  • Use ripe, juicy oranges and lemons for the best flavor.
