Greek Hot Dog Sauce

Not tomato based and so close to what our local famous Hot Dog joints offer. Passed along from my Uncle Bob who knew the owner of a local Hot Dog joint in the early 50s. Let me know what YOU think because I think it's GREAT! Freezes well and since a little goes a long way, I suggest freezing in smaller containers so you have it on hand when needed. Also makes a great gift for the chili dog lovers you know! Update 6/2013. Though I've stayed true to this recipe, I tried adding ground cloves and found it added another level of flavor that we enjoy even more than the local "Dog Joints" make. Simple change so if you make this regularly, give it a try!

My Uncle Bob's Famous Greek Hot Dog Sauce: A Toledo Tradition

For years, the aroma of sizzling hot dogs, generously slathered in a secret sauce, has been a hallmark of Toledo's culinary scene. Nettie's and Rudy's, legendary hot dog joints, hold a special place in the hearts (and stomachs) of locals, and their signature sauce has always been shrouded in mystery. But today, I'm lifting the veil on a closely guarded family recipe – a Greek Hot Dog Sauce passed down from my Uncle Bob, who, in the early 1950s, had a connection to one of these iconic establishments. This recipe isn’t just a hot dog topping; it's a taste of Toledo history, a flavorful journey back in time.

The beauty of this sauce lies in its simplicity and unexpected depth of flavor. It’s a far cry from the typical tomato-based concoctions. Instead, it boasts a rich, savory profile built on a foundation of ground beef, carefully balanced spices, and a touch of magic (that's the oil, trust me!). The spices work in perfect harmony: the warmth of the chili powder and cayenne pepper is perfectly complemented by the earthy notes of oregano and cumin, while the paprika adds a smoky depth. And the secret ingredient? Ground cloves! My addition to the original recipe, this unexpected twist elevates the sauce to a whole new level of deliciousness. It's a subtle enhancement that adds a layer of complexity, making it even more irresistible than the originals.

The first time I tasted this sauce, I was blown away. It was unlike anything I had ever experienced. It wasn’t just a condiment; it was an experience. The richness of the beef, the subtle heat of the spices, and the lingering warmth of the cloves created a symphony of flavors that danced on my palate. And the best part? It’s remarkably easy to make. The entire process, from simmering the sauce to letting it cool, takes less than an hour. Once you’ve tasted it, you'll understand why it's been a family favorite for generations.

The versatility of this sauce extends beyond hot dogs. Its robust flavor makes it a perfect topping for chili, burgers, or even as a dip for your favorite chips. And because a little goes a long way, I always make a large batch and freeze it in smaller portions. This way, I always have a supply on hand, ready to add a touch of Toledo magic to any meal. It's also the perfect homemade gift for any chili dog enthusiast! Imagine the joy on their faces when they receive a container of this flavorful treasure. It's a gift that keeps on giving, a delicious taste of tradition, and a reminder of the special bonds we share through food.

This isn't just a recipe; it's a story. It's a piece of Toledo's culinary heritage, passed down through the years. It’s a testament to the power of family, tradition, and the simple joy of sharing a delicious meal. So, gather your ingredients, put on some classic music, and get ready to create some memories with this incredible Greek Hot Dog Sauce. You’ll be surprised how quickly it becomes a family staple—a flavorful reminder of the rich history and vibrant culture that makes Toledo so special. And who knows, you might even start your own local legend!

A note about the ground beef: While lean ground beef is preferred for health-conscious individuals, adding a tablespoon or two of vegetable oil is key to unlocking the full flavor potential of the sauce. The oil enhances the taste, allowing the savory goodness of the spices to truly shine through. The original recipe comes from a time before much was known about cholesterol and fat, but adding the oil adds a vital layer of rich taste and depth.

Freezing for Later: I highly recommend freezing this sauce in smaller containers. Because a little goes a long way, it's easier to manage if you have smaller portions ready to go whenever a craving strikes. This way, you'll always have a quick and easy way to add a burst of flavour to any dish. Think of it as a little taste of Toledo, always readily available in your freezer.
