Step-by-step

  • Peel sweet potatoes, cut into small chunks, and add to a small pot with water to cover. Add 1 tsp. salt to water. Bring to a boil and boil for 20 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, in a small saucepan add butter, maple syrup, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Bring to a boil, stirring a little. Remove from heat and add vanilla.
  • When potatoes are done, drain water and put potatoes into a 2 1/2 qt. casserole dish. Sprinkle with pecans, then pour sauce over all. Toss GENTLY to coat. Arrange so that all the pieces are submerged as much as possible.
  • Bake, uncovered, in a 350-degree oven for 40 minutes. (Give the potatoes a gentle stir to turn them halfway through. Be careful; the sauce will be very hot, and potatoes can fall apart easily.)
  • Remove from oven and turn oven to low or medium broil. Top evenly with marshmallows, completely covering.
  • Place into oven and watch! As soon as they start to poof up and brown, remove them immediately or they will catch fire. If they burn, scrape the top off, re-top with more marshmallows, and try again!
  • Serve warm.

My Cozy Thanksgiving Tradition: Maple Cinnamon Sweet Potatoes

Thanksgiving. The word itself conjures up images of warmth, family, and of course, delicious food. For years, I've been the one orchestrating the feast in my home, a role I relish. It's not just about the perfectly roasted turkey or the creamy mashed potatoes; it's about the little details, the traditions that bring everyone together. And for my family, one of those traditions is undoubtedly my Maple Cinnamon Sweet Potatoes with Marshmallows and Pecans.

This isn't just any side dish; it's a labor of love, a recipe honed over years of Thanksgiving gatherings. My husband, bless his heart, has a particular fondness for this dish. He'd practically riot if he had to wait a whole year for another taste! I started making it years ago, a simple recipe initially, inspired by a magazine clipping. But over time, it's become something more than just a collection of ingredients; it's a taste of home, a symbol of our family's shared Thanksgiving memories.

The preparation itself is a mindful process. I love the ritual of peeling and chopping the sweet potatoes, their earthy aroma filling the kitchen. The subtle sweetness of the maple syrup mingling with the warm spice of cinnamon creates a captivating fragrance that permeates the air. There's something comforting about the gentle simmering of the sauce, the quiet anticipation as the potatoes soften in the pot. It's a moment of peaceful preparation amidst the flurry of Thanksgiving activity.

Then comes the baking. The oven's warmth transforms the humble sweet potato into something truly special. The marshmallows, a decadent topping, melt into a gooey, caramelized perfection, creating a delightful textural contrast to the tender sweetness of the potatoes themselves. The pecans add a satisfying crunch, a final touch of delightful texture that elevates this dish to another level.

But this dish isn't merely about the taste. It’s about the process, the memories woven into every step. It's the shared laughter in the kitchen while we prepare the meal, the happy chatter around the table as we share this special side dish. Each year, as I make this recipe, I'm reminded of the people I love, the warmth of our family gatherings, and the beauty of simple moments shared. It's a recipe that brings together the flavors of autumn and the love of a family.

The secret ingredient? It’s not just the perfectly measured spices or the quality of the marshmallows (although those do matter!). It's the love and care that goes into creating this dish. It’s the intentionality, the quiet satisfaction of transforming simple ingredients into a masterpiece of flavor and comfort. It's the unspoken connection that we share, all gathered around the table, each bite a reminder of what truly matters – the people we share our lives with.

So, this Thanksgiving, as you gather with your loved ones, consider adding a touch of tradition to your own table. Try this recipe. Let the sweet aroma fill your kitchen, creating a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. Let the taste transport you back to simpler times, reminding you of the importance of family, gratitude, and the simple joys of a shared meal. And remember, it’s not just about the food; it’s about the memories that are created alongside it.

Happy Thanksgiving!
