Step-by-step

  • Place the whizzed onion and garlic into a bowl along with all the other ingredients for the meatballs.
  • Squidge messily together with your hands making sure everything is mixed up well.
  • Make small balls from the mix...I made about 20 with this I think.
  • Place on a baking tray.
  • Bake at 200 degrees for 20 minutes, making sure they are cooked through by cutting one open...I challenge you not to eat that one straight away!
  • Place the cooked meatballs into a bowl with kitchen roll to mop up the excess fat.
  • Whilst the meatballs are baking place the sauce ingredients into a small saucepan.
  • Allow the sauce to simmer for 15-20 minutes, then place in a liquidiser or use a hand-held implement to do the same job...to make a smooth sauce that the kids will not know has hidden vegetables in!

My Family's Favorite Meatball and Sauce Recipe

As a busy working mom, finding time to cook delicious and healthy meals can feel like a Herculean task. Weeknights are a whirlwind of school pick-ups, homework battles, and the ever-present pressure to get dinner on the table. But amidst the chaos, there's one dish that always brings a sense of calm and contentment to our family: my homemade meatballs and sauce. It’s a recipe born from necessity – a need for a quick, easy, and utterly satisfying meal that everyone enjoys. And let me tell you, this recipe delivers.

The beauty of this recipe lies in its versatility. You can easily adapt it to whatever you have on hand. Don't have fresh oregano? Dried works perfectly fine. No gluten-free bread? Regular bread will do just as well. I often use whatever ground meat I have in the fridge – beef, lamb, even a mix of both. The sauce is equally flexible; I’ve experimented with different vegetables, adding zucchini, carrots, or even a touch of spinach for extra nutrients (and to sneak in those extra veggies that my kids wouldn't normally touch). The secret? The sauce is so flavorful, you can't even taste the hidden vegetables!

The process itself is surprisingly straightforward. It's one of those recipes that's almost therapeutic to make. The act of gently rolling the meatballs, the satisfying aroma of the simmering sauce, it's a small ritual that brings me a sense of peace in the middle of a busy week. And the best part? The leftovers are just as good, if not better, the next day! It's perfect for meal prepping, saving me precious time during the week. I often double the recipe, making enough for several dinners, and freeze the extra portions for those nights when I'm truly short on time.

This recipe is more than just a meal; it's a symbol of home, warmth, and family. It's a dish that brings us together, a comforting aroma that fills our kitchen with love, and a taste that reminds us of simpler times. It's the perfect antidote to the stresses of modern life. So, if you’re looking for a recipe that's quick, easy, delicious, and adaptable, then look no further. Give my Meatballs and Sauce recipe a try – I promise you won't be disappointed.
