Step-by-step

  • Heat oven to 150 degrees C.
  • Mix together the paprika, cumin, pepper, brown sugar and salt. Rub over the pork and massage in well.
  • Put the onions and garlic in the bottom of a casserole dish (that has a lid).
  • Put the pork on top of the garlic and onion.
  • Cover with lid and cook in the oven for anywhere between 5 to 8 hours.
  • Check around 4 hours and again at 6 and 7 hours – make sure it has juice. If no juice, add about a cup full of water or cider.
  • Take it out of the oven. Put the meat in a separate dish – do not throw out the juices in the casserole dish.
  • With 2 forks, pull the meat apart until it looks all shredded.
  • Pour the barbecue sauce into the casserole juices and stir until it is all combined.
  • Return the meat to the casserole and toss it all around so that the sauce covers all the meat.
  • Serve in a bread roll (or however you like it). It goes really well with coleslaw.

My Weekend Pulled Pork Adventure: A Simple Recipe for Busy Lives

As a busy working mom, finding time to cook a delicious and satisfying meal can feel like a Herculean task. Weekends are often the only time I can dedicate to more elaborate recipes, and this pulled pork recipe has become a family favorite for its ease of preparation and incredible flavor. It's a perfect blend of sweet and savory, tender and juicy, and always a crowd-pleaser. The best part? Most of the cooking time is hands-off, allowing me to catch up on other things while the magical aroma fills my kitchen.

The secret to this pulled pork lies in the slow cooking method. The low and slow heat of the oven allows the pork shoulder to become incredibly tender, practically falling apart as you shred it. This technique is incredibly forgiving, which is crucial for my sometimes hectic schedule. I don't need to worry about precise cooking times, and if I’m slightly off, the results are still delicious. The simple spice rub adds just the right amount of flavor without being overpowering, and the addition of apple cider vinegar adds a delightful tang that balances the sweetness perfectly. The barbecue sauce at the end ties everything together, creating a mouthwatering sauce that coats each tender strand of pork.

I often prepare this pulled pork on a Saturday morning, letting it simmer while I tackle other household tasks. The aroma alone is enough to make the whole house feel cozy and inviting. By the time evening rolls around, dinner is practically ready. We usually serve it on hamburger buns with a simple coleslaw on the side for a complete meal that's both satisfying and surprisingly elegant. The leftovers are equally enjoyable – perfect for sandwiches throughout the week. This recipe isn't just about a delicious meal; it's about creating a relaxing and enjoyable weekend ritual that brings my family together. It's about the shared experience of enjoying a home-cooked meal that's as comforting as it is flavorful, a perfect reward after a busy week.

The beauty of this recipe is its adaptability. You can easily adjust the spices to suit your preference. Feel free to experiment with different types of barbecue sauce or even add other vegetables to the casserole. I’ve even been known to add a few chipotle peppers for a spicier kick. The possibilities are endless! Ultimately, it’s a recipe that allows for creative expression and personal touches, making it a unique experience every time. Beyond the taste, this recipe represents a commitment to family, to creating memories, and to savoring the simple pleasures of life. It's a reminder to slow down, appreciate the process, and enjoy the delicious results – a weekend ritual I wouldn’t trade for anything.

So, if you're looking for a weekend project that's both rewarding and delicious, give this pulled pork a try. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
