Copycat John Alden Rollwich

If you've ever been to Cape Cod, you've almost certainly either seen or eaten at one of the many Box Lunch franchises in the area. This is my recreation of one of their famous "Rollwiches", scaled down to fit my smaller appetite. Feel free to make this in a larger tortilla and increase the other ingredients if you desire. If you add some slices of swiss cheese, this becomes a Priscilla Alden!

Step-by-step

  • Spread the mayonnaise on the tortilla, making sure to leave at least 1/2 inch around the outside.
  • Glop on a thin layer of cranberry sauce, but enough that it's fully covered. If you mash the cranberry sauce with a fork it seems to spread more easily.
  • Add the turkey and a thin layer of lettuce (or spinach).
  • Place the 3 tomato slices in a line down the center of the tortilla.
  • Make sure you don't fill the tortilla too full or get too close to the edge, or it won't wrap properly!
  • Carefully roll the tortilla into a wrap.
  • Cut into two pieces, if desired.
  • Dig in and enjoy a taste of New England!

My Cape Cod Culinary Adventure: A Copycat John Alden Rollwich Recipe

As a busy working mom, finding time to cook elaborate meals is a luxury I rarely have. But that doesn't mean I have to sacrifice delicious and satisfying food! Recently, I discovered a hidden gem on Cape Cod – the Box Lunch franchises and their famous Rollwiches. These aren't your average sandwiches; they're a delightful blend of simple ingredients, perfectly balanced and undeniably addictive. Intrigued, I decided to recreate my own version at home, something quick, easy, and just as satisfying. Let me tell you, the journey was worth it!

The John Alden Rollwich, named after a pivotal figure in Plymouth history, captured my imagination. The simplicity of its construction belied its complex flavor profile. It's a testament to the magic of quality ingredients working in harmony. The soft, yielding flour tortilla provides the perfect canvas for a symphony of textures and tastes. The creamy mayonnaise offers a subtle richness, beautifully contrasting with the tart sweetness of the cranberry sauce. Thinly sliced turkey adds a savory element, while crisp lettuce (or spinach for a slightly peppery kick) offers a welcome textural contrast. And the bright, juicy tomato slices provide a refreshing acidity that cuts through the richness of the other components. The whole thing is a testament to the fact that sometimes, the most memorable meals are the simplest.

The beauty of this recipe lies in its adaptability. I scaled down the original recipe to fit my smaller appetite, but feel free to adjust it to your own needs. A larger tortilla, more turkey, and even a sprinkle of cheese (perhaps Swiss, transforming it into a "Priscilla Alden" Rollwich, as I’ve heard it called) will create an even heartier meal. I often make a batch of these rollwiches on the weekend for a quick lunch during the busy work week. It's a satisfying and delicious way to ensure I have a healthy and flavorful meal, even when my schedule is jam-packed.

Beyond the ease and deliciousness, making these rollwiches felt like a small act of rebellion against the pervasive fast-food culture. It's a small act of self-care, a quiet moment of connection with simple ingredients and the legacy of a culinary tradition. I find immense satisfaction in creating something from scratch, knowing exactly what goes into it. This isn't just a sandwich; it's a culinary exploration, a quick escape, a tribute to the simple pleasures, and a tasty bit of Cape Cod right in my own kitchen. It's more than a meal; it's a story.

The process of making the rollwiches is meditative, a soothing counterpoint to the often frenetic pace of modern life. The simple act of spreading the mayonnaise, carefully layering the ingredients, and rolling up the tortilla is a miniature act of creation. Each rollwich is a small masterpiece, a delicious testament to the power of simple ingredients and mindful preparation. It's a reminder that even in the midst of chaos, there's always time for a little bit of culinary joy.

So, the next time you find yourself craving a quick, delicious, and satisfying meal, give this Copycat John Alden Rollwich a try. It's more than just a recipe; it's a small taste of Cape Cod, a moment of culinary satisfaction, and a delicious way to savor the simple things in life.
