Step-by-step

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  • Lightly grease 2 cookie sheets; set aside.
  • Sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt; set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl cream the shortening and sugar together, until light and fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla and beat. Add dry ingredients, alternately with the buttermilk; starting and ending with the flour. Mix well.
  • Drop batter by tablespoonfuls onto greased cookie sheets. Try to make the mounds as round as possible, they'll look better when they're done. Whatever shape you drop the dough, that's the shape the cookie will be. The dough isn't real runny, but it's not real firm either. Space the cookies at LEAST 2 inches apart, they DO spread out quite a bit. Make sure you make an even amount of cookies--it takes 2 halves to make one Whoopie Pie.
  • Bake 8-10 minutes, or until cookies spring back when lightly touched and they're no longer shiny on top.
  • Leave the cookies on the cookie sheets for a few minutes, they'll fall apart if you remove them immediately. Cool completely before filling.
  • Cream the butter and shortening until light and fluffy. Beat in the marshmallow creme. Add vanilla and beat well. Add the confectioners sugar and beat until smooth.
  • Spread 1 TBS of the filling onto one half of the cookies. Top with the other half. Of course, if you've made the cookies bigger, you'll need to put in more filling. I fill them as full as I want.
  • These freeze well, but they have to be air-tight or they get soggy.

My Favorite Whoopie Pie Recipe: A Sweet Treat for Any Occasion

Whoopie pies. Just the name conjures up images of childhood, of bake sales and sweet treats shared with friends. For me, the memory of whoopie pies is inextricably linked to my grandmother's kitchen. The scent of warm chocolate cookies, the rich, creamy filling – it’s a sensory experience that takes me right back. These weren't just cookies; they were little pockets of happiness, a testament to the simple joys of baking and sharing. This recipe isn't just about making whoopie pies; it's about recreating those warm, fuzzy feelings.

Over the years, I've experimented with countless recipes, tweaking and adjusting until I arrived at this perfect balance of moist, chocolatey cookies and a marshmallow-infused filling that's both decadent and light. It's a recipe I've shared with friends and family, one that’s sparked joy and created countless happy memories. The best part? It's surprisingly easy. Even a beginner baker can achieve incredible results with a little patience and a dash of love.

The Magic of the Ingredients:

The success of this recipe lies in the careful selection of ingredients. The cocoa powder, for instance, is crucial. I prefer Dutch-processed cocoa for its richer flavor and deeper color. The buttermilk adds a delightful tanginess, preventing the cookies from becoming dry and creating a wonderfully soft texture. And the shortening in the filling? Don't skip it! It's the secret ingredient to achieving that perfectly smooth, spreadable consistency. I've tried making this filling with just butter before, but the result is far too stiff and lacks the desirable creamy texture. It's a balance of flavors and textures that makes this recipe so special.

More Than Just a Recipe: A Story of Connection

Baking, for me, has always been more than just following instructions. It's a form of self-expression, a way to connect with loved ones and create lasting memories. The simple act of measuring ingredients, mixing batters, and watching cookies emerge from the oven is a therapeutic process. It is a time of mindful intention, and the result is more than just a finished product; it’s an embodiment of care and thoughtfulness.

This Whoopie Pie recipe isn't just a set of instructions; it's a legacy. It's a tradition passed down, a story told through each bite. It’s about the warmth of sharing, the joy of creating something delicious, and the lasting comfort of a sweet treat that brings loved ones together.

Beyond the Bite: Creative Applications

While this recipe is fantastic on its own, the possibilities for variation are endless. Try adding different extracts to the cookie dough for a unique twist, such as peppermint or almond. You could even experiment with different types of filling, incorporating nuts, chocolate chips, or even fresh fruit. These whoopie pies also make fantastic ice cream sandwiches, a delightful summer treat. The sky's the limit when it comes to customizing this recipe to your liking!

A Recipe for Happiness:

More than just a dessert, this Whoopie Pie recipe is a recipe for happiness. It's a chance to create something beautiful, something delicious, something to share with those you cherish. So, gather your ingredients, preheat your oven, and embark on a culinary adventure that's filled with sweetness, warmth, and lasting memories. The taste of these whoopie pies is a taste of home, a taste of love, and a taste of pure joy.

A Final Note: Don't be afraid to experiment! Baking is a journey of discovery, and every attempt brings you closer to mastering your own unique version of this classic treat. Remember, the most important ingredient is love, and that will always shine through in the final product.
