Monkey Bread in a Jar

Baking in mason jars is all the rage right now. There are cakes, cupcakes, and the like. So I thought why not make bread in a jar? Better yet, why not monkey bread in a jar? I love the idea of having individual servings so I baked mine in 8 ounce mason jars. A few tips: You’ll want to be sure that the jars have been thoroughly cleaned prior to using and that you spray them well with cooking spray so the monkey bread easily comes out. Also do NOT overfill the jars or they will overflow. These take minutes to prepare and are a fun way to get the kids involved in cooking their own special breakfast or dessert treats!

Step-by-step

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray mason jars with cooking spray and place them into a deep sided baking tray.
  • Into a bowl, add: sugars, and cinnamon. Whisk together to combine. Place cut biscuits pieces into sugar mixture. Toss to combine and coat well.
  • Evenly distribute coated biscuit pieces between the jars. Adding a little extra of the sugar mixture as you go. Fill only 3/4 of the way up the jar (to allow for bread to rise and not overflow).
  • Bake for approximately 10-15 minutes until monkey bread has risen and is golden and bubbly. Allow jars to cool slightly prior to serving.

Monitor the oven temperature closely at 350 degrees Fahrenheit, because glass conducts heat differently than traditional metal bakeware and requires careful regulation to prevent scorching the exterior before the center sets. Glass containers insulate thermal energy efficiently, meaning the sugar-coating mixture liquefies rapidly and caramelizes at the interior glass walls.

  • Grease the 8-ounce mason jars thoroughly with oil-based cooking spray to create a non-stick barrier against the sticky sugar solution.
  • Fill each jar strictly to the three-quarter mark to leave necessary headroom for expansion as the dough releases steam and rises during baking.
  • Bake for 10 to 15 minutes, watching for a bubbly surface and deep golden coloration on the top dough pieces.

Pair these individual portions with unsweetened black coffee or sharp citrus segments to balance the dense sweetness of the caramelized sugar coating. Allow the glass vessels to cool partially on a wire rack before handling to prevent thermal shock and potential cracking.
