Step-by-step

  • There are two methods you can use to cook your steak depending on its thickness. If the steak is thick (1 ½ - 1 ¾ inch / 4 - 4 ½ cm), follow the instructions for Reverse-Seared Steak that requires both oven baking and pan searing. Otherwise, for thinner cuts, follow my guide to cook the steak on a pan.
  • Once the steaks are cooked, transfer them onto a wire rack, loosely cover with a foil and let them rest for about 10 minutes before serving.
  • Meanwhile, prepare the mustard & peppercorn sauce. Add the remaining ghee to the pan where you cooked the steaks.
  • Crush the peppercorns slightly using a rolling pin or a mortar and pestle.
  • Place in the pan and cook over a medium-high heat for 2-3 minutes, until fragrant.
  • Add the onion powder, mustard, cream and bone broth and reduce the heat to medium.
  • Bring to a boil and let the liquid reduce by half. If using fresh onion, add to the pan and cook for 3-5 minutes before adding the peppercorns.
  • Cook for 3-5 minutes or until creamy.
  • Serve the steaks with the sauce, keto cauli-mash and/ or some crunchy greens.

My Simple, Satisfying Steak with Quick Mustard and Peppercorn Sauce

As a busy working mom, finding time to cook a delicious and satisfying meal can feel like a monumental task. But sometimes, the simplest recipes are the most rewarding. This steak with quick mustard and peppercorn sauce is a perfect example. It's elegant enough for a special occasion, yet quick and easy enough for a weeknight dinner. The rich, savory sauce complements the perfectly cooked steak, making it a meal that my family always enjoys.

I love how versatile this recipe is. You can easily adjust it to your preferences. For instance, I prefer using pink Himalayan salt, adding a beautiful pink hue and a slightly different taste compared to regular table salt. But feel free to use whatever salt you have on hand. The same goes for the cream – heavy whipping cream lends a luxuriously rich texture, but coconut milk offers a delicious alternative for those following a dairy-free diet. And don’t be afraid to experiment with the peppercorns; a mix of black, white, and green peppercorns adds a delightful complexity of flavor.

The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity. The preparation time is minimal, and the cooking process is straightforward, even for someone like me, who often juggles work, kids, and everything in between. I often make this on busy weeknights, as a way to treat myself and my family to something special without spending hours in the kitchen. The process is so relaxing for me; the smell of the searing steak, the gentle simmer of the sauce – it’s almost meditative. It’s a chance to step away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and focus on creating something delicious.

The best part? The leftovers are just as good the next day! I often pack the leftover steak and sauce for lunch, enjoying a taste of luxury amidst the chaos of my work day. It’s a small indulgence that keeps me energized and focused. It’s a reminder that even amidst the pressures of modern life, taking the time to nourish yourself with a delicious, well-prepared meal is not a luxury, but a necessity.

This recipe isn't just about the food; it's about creating a moment of calm and satisfaction in a busy life. The simple act of cooking, of transforming humble ingredients into a delicious meal, is a form of self-care, a way to reconnect with myself and my family. It's a reminder that even in the midst of the daily grind, there's always time for a little bit of culinary magic.

So, give this recipe a try. You might be surprised at how much joy a simple, flavorful steak with a quick mustard and peppercorn sauce can bring to your table. It's a reminder that even on the busiest of days, there's always room for deliciousness and a little self-care.
