Step-by-step

  • Line a 9×9 pan with foil, and spray lightly with cooking spray.
  • Place your unwrapped peanut butter cups face down in your prepared pan. (You might need to cut some in half to make them fit nicely.)
  • Over low heat melt your butter.
  • Add your marshmallows to the melted butter and stir until marshmallows are melted.
  • Remove from heat and stir in your peanut butter.
  • When the peanut butter is incorporated stir in your krispies.
  • When combined dump the krispie mixture on top of the peanut butter cups and press evenly in to pan.
  • Let sit for at least 15 minutes to cool and then flip the pan upside down releasing the krispie treats.
  • Peel foil back off krispies.
  • Drizzle your melted peanut butter chips on top of the krispie treats and let set before cutting into squares.

Most home cooks pack marshmallow cereal treats into the pan with heavy downward force, which compresses the puffed rice and yields hard, dense squares rather than light, chewy ones. Pairing rich confections like these requires contrasting flavors and textures that cut through heavy sugar and dense fats. Because these bars lean heavily into sweet dairy and roasted peanut notes, balance them thoughtfully on a dessert table. Strategic accompaniments transform a simple lunchbox sweet into an intentional offering for guests. Here are specific ways to serve and handle this dessert:

  • Serve alongside crisp, tart green apple slices or unseasoned sparkling water to cleanse the palate between bites of dense peanut butter and marshmallow.
  • Melt the peanut butter chips in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals at 50 percent power to prevent the cocoa butter from seizing and turning grainy.
  • Line the 9x9-inch baking pan with aluminum stock and coat it thoroughly with cooking spray so the inverted bars release cleanly without tearing the base layer of chocolate cups.
  • Store cut squares in an airtight container at room temperature with a slice of plain white bread inside to maintain softness for up to three days.

Originating from the mid-century surge of commercially processed puffed rice cereals and convenience sweets, layered marshmallow treats remain a staple of American home baking. Thoughtful accompaniments bridge the gap between casual snack foods and properly presented desserts.
