Jeff's Solden Sandwiches

From the kitchen of Jeff Hanan, Dresden Germany 2005. My family moved to Dresden Germany for two years and both years we took a week long trip in February to High Solden, Austria. My husband, Jeff, developed this breakfast sandwich while on our first trip. In Europe we discovered breakfast buffets to be a bit different than an American version. You could find scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage. Cold cereal, granola and yogurt. Otherwise it was very different. Who serves cold lunch meat and cheese at breakfast time? We soon adapted and this recipe became Jeff's every morning favorite! Soon, my son and I both followed. Our second year skiing the Alps, I noticed we all made our sandwiches a bit different. After arriving back in the States, February arrived and although we didn't have the Alps, we did have Solden Sandwiches to remind us of our time in Austria.

A Taste of the Alps: Jeff's Solden Sandwiches

The year was 2005. Our family was living in Dresden, Germany, a city brimming with history and charm. But every February, we traded cobblestone streets for snow-capped peaks, embarking on a week-long ski trip to the breathtaking Solden, Austria. It was during one of these trips that my husband, Jeff, created a breakfast sandwich so simple, yet so evocative of our alpine adventures, it became a cherished family tradition.

European breakfast buffets, we soon discovered, are a world apart from their American counterparts. While you could certainly find the usual suspects – scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage – the rest was a delightful surprise. Cold cuts and cheese at breakfast? Initially, it seemed unconventional. But as the crisp mountain air filled our lungs and the smell of pine filled the air, we quickly adapted to the local culinary customs. Jeff, ever the innovator in the kitchen, started crafting his own unique breakfast sandwich, combining the readily available cold cuts and cheeses with buttery rolls. It was a perfect blend of convenience and deliciousness, ideal for fueling up before a day on the slopes.

What started as a simple solution to a slightly unfamiliar breakfast quickly evolved into a family favorite. Soon, both our son and I were joining Jeff in the daily ritual of constructing our own Solden Sandwiches. The best part? Every sandwich was unique! The beauty of this recipe lies in its adaptability. One could explore different bread types, a variety of deli meats, an assortment of cheeses, and even different condiments, allowing each person to create a breakfast sandwich as individual as their skiing style. Over the two years we spent in Austria, I noticed our creative sandwich-making skills grew in tandem with our skiing abilities.

Our return to the States didn't diminish our love for Jeff's Solden Sandwiches. The first February after our return felt strangely incomplete without the thrill of the Alps, but the familiar taste of these simple yet delightful sandwiches provided a comforting reminder of our time amidst the snowy peaks. Each bite transported us back to the cozy après-ski atmosphere, the laughter shared over hot chocolate, and the stunning views that stretched out across the Austrian landscape. And so, a simple breakfast sandwich became a treasured symbol of our European adventure, a tasty link to unforgettable memories.

The versatility of Jeff's Solden Sandwiches is truly their greatest strength. Whether you prefer a quick and easy breakfast, a hearty brunch option, or a delicious snack, this recipe can be tailored to your preferences. Use various types of rolls, experiment with different meats and cheeses, add in some fresh vegetables for extra flavor and nutrients—the options are endless. And so, this isn't just a recipe; it is a doorway to creativity in the kitchen, a chance to craft something uniquely your own, just as each of our Solden Sandwiches were unique and special during our time in Austria.

The simplicity of this recipe is a testament to the fact that sometimes the most satisfying meals are the easiest to make. There’s no complicated techniques, no unusual ingredients—just fresh, quality ingredients that complement each other perfectly. This recipe reflects the spirit of our Austrian adventures; spontaneous, adaptable, and above all, delicious. It's a recipe that can be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of their cooking skills or experience.

So go ahead, gather your favorite deli meats and cheeses, grab some rolls, and create your own taste of the Alps. Each bite will be a reminder that sometimes, the best memories are made not in fancy restaurants or Michelin-star dining experiences but in simple moments of shared enjoyment, like creating and sharing a delicious sandwich.
