Step-by-step

  • Core the apples, persimmons and pears and cut into quarters. Leave the skin on.
  • Cut the orange into slices.
  • Pop all of the fruit, along with the water, cinnamon sticks and mulling spices (tie these into some cheese cloth so that they are easily removed), into the slow cooker.
  • Set on low for 8 hours.
  • Once cooked, remove the cinnamon sticks, the mulling spices and as much of the fruit as possible.
  • Pour the remaining liquid into a blender (I do this in 2 batches), blend, and then pour through a fine mesh sieve (I actually used a nut milk bag), into a clean container.
  • Pour the cider back into the slow cooker, and set to keep warm.
  • Serve warm, and use some honey or maple syrup to sweeten if required.
  • Garnish with some orange and apple slices and some pomegranate arils to make it pretty (optional).

A Cozy Fall Treat: Homemade Hot Apple Cider

As the leaves turn vibrant hues of red, orange, and gold, and a crispness fills the air, there's nothing quite like curling up with a warm, comforting beverage. This year, I've been experimenting with different recipes to capture the essence of fall, and my latest discovery is a truly delightful homemade hot apple cider. Forget the artificial flavors and overly sweet store-bought versions; this recipe brings the taste of autumn to life with the freshest ingredients and a touch of homemade magic.

The process of making this cider is surprisingly simple, perfect for a busy weeknight or a relaxing weekend afternoon. I love how it transforms humble apples, pears, and persimmons into a fragrant and flavorful drink. The slow cooker does most of the work, infusing the fruit with its sweetness and natural aromas. The addition of cinnamon and mulling spices adds a warming spice that perfectly complements the sweetness of the fruit. The gentle heat from the slow cooker extracts the maximum flavor, creating a cider that is far superior to anything you’ll find in a bottle.

This isn't just a drink; it's an experience. Imagine the scent of cinnamon and apples filling your kitchen as the cider simmers away. The process itself is therapeutic, a perfect way to unwind after a long day. And the best part? You can customize it to your liking. Add a drizzle of honey or maple syrup for extra sweetness, or garnish with vibrant pomegranate arils and orange slices for a touch of elegance. The possibilities are endless.

It's equally delightful served to guests during a fall gathering, adding a touch of homemade charm to any occasion. The vibrant color and inviting aroma alone will leave a lasting impression.

Beyond the recipe: I encourage you to experiment with different types of apples and other fruits. The beauty of this recipe lies in its adaptability. Try incorporating other fall fruits like cranberries or quince. Feel free to adjust the spices to your preference. Maybe add a touch of ginger or nutmeg for an extra layer of flavor. The most important ingredient, however, is your willingness to embrace the autumnal spirit and enjoy the process.

A perfect fall memory: This recipe isn't just about the cider itself; it's about the feeling it evokes. It’s about the comforting warmth on a chilly evening, the aroma of spices filling the air, and the simple joy of creating something delicious with your own hands. It’s a recipe that will become a cherished part of your fall traditions, a reminder of cozy moments and the beauty of the season. So gather your ingredients, put on some relaxing music, and let the magic of fall unfold in your kitchen.
